Patricia Ng, experienced educational consultant, believes it is important to increase awareness of special needs at different stages of life

Patricia Ng is an experienced educational consultant who specialises in educational therapy for children with and without special needs, from preschool to secondary levels. She is also a Fellow member of the Register of Educational Therapists, Asia (RETA).

Patricia’s ability to engage with children and help them make improvements in their studies has garnered her much support from the parents. She has also taught pre-service and in-service teacher courses in special education and conducted research projects in early childhood and special education.

Her work in research has been recognised with the award of the Dean’s Commendation for Research in her Master in Education (Special Education) degree from National Institute of Education (NIE)/Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore (SG). Patricia is also the winner of the 2013 Society for Reading and Literacy Research Award. The areas covered in her published works include those on language and literacy difficulties, challenging behaviors, as well as interventions involving physical education, music, virtual reality and robotics. She has presented her research at several UnITE SpLD conferences organized by the Dyslexia Association of Singapore and has contributed to the Asia Pacific Journal of Developmental Differences (APJDD).

What started her involvement in SpLD? Her son. He was diagnosed with ADHD during preschool and she wasn’t able to help him effectively, so she embarked on further studies in Masters in Special Education. To further gain knowledge, she became a RETA member. The membership provided her with greater support in avenues for resources such as conferences, publications, teaching materials, current affairs and marketing for clients. She shares that it is important for Singapore to increase awareness of special needs at different stages of life.

When asked what is the one thing that never fails to make her smile in the work that she does, she says, ‘The sweet success after the implementation of meticulous plans based upon sound principles of teaching.’

Her words of wisdom,

Always keep an open mind and a growth mindset.
