Insights from a General Education Therapist by Liu Haifeng

The year 2020 is destined to be an extraordinary year, a year worth remembering for everyone. The coronavirus epidemic has swept almost the whole world with the passage of time. While thanking the health care workers who bet their lives and work day and night on the frontline, I believe that everyone would like to contribute their own small part in this war against the epidemic.

I was an ordinary Chinese education therapist at the Dyslexia Association of Singapore. That day, I shut down my laptop, cleared my desktop, packed up the teaching materials that I usually needed for my classes, and then said goodbye to my colleagues, hoping to take care of each other. In order to prevent the epidemic, we had to suspend classes, but it was the common wish of parents, students and teachers to ensure that all our lovely children could continue to receive relevant teaching support. Under the leadership of the association’s management, we began to create the students’ home study lessons plan. As the saying goes, “All hands make light work”, during this period of school closure in Singapore, teachers encouraged and supported each other to design new lessons, learn new teaching software, and consult on distance learning methods, and now we can hear the sound of students reading aloud and see their happy smiles on the online platform.

Online classes bring new challenges and a lot of fun to every teacher. I have a primary 3 boy who is usually the most active boy in the class, but the other day he was not only silent, but also lying in bed with his mother, no matter how I tried to motivate him. Later, after talking to his mother, I realized that he was not feeling well today. I had to raise the pitch of my voice or call his name from time to time, just in case these two fell asleep accidentally. I don’t want to think about the effect of learning, but I’m touched by such an attitude towards learning, and children who work hard are the cutest!

Another time, I was explaining the words online when a student on the other side of the network forgot to turn off the microphone, and then a “wah-wah-wah” song made me and the other students laugh. Well, let’s take the opportunity to relax together! Let’s start the Chinese song now! The boring online class needed a little something to spice it up, didn’t it?

Through the teachers’ continuous efforts, the online teaching at DAS now ensures the quality of teaching while keeping the children’s confidence in learning during this unusual period. I remember a teacher forwarded a text of parental thanks in the whatsapp group, instantly, the whole group was touched and my eyes were moistened, I believe this warmth can be experienced by all educators. The virus has no mercy but human we share warm feelings in spite of it, let’s look forward to the day we return to that small classroom where we know so well with our students!
