Senior Specialist Tutor, DAS International
RETA Fellow
“If a child can’t learn the way one teaches, then one should teach the way he/she learns’. This has been Veena’s personal mission as a special educator.
As a postgraduate in English, closely followed by a Bachelor’s in Education, Veena launched into her teaching career handling English and Social-Studies for Secondary and Senior Secondary classes. As a classroom teacher, she was aware that every child had a unique style and pace of learning. Her Diploma in Special Education paved way towards helping children with specific learning differences attain their potential. Having been a classroom teacher on one hand and a special Educator working on Curriculum based remediation on the other meant that she could link the learning expectations posed by the curriculum to the working style of the child. The Curriculum Based Remediation works keeping in mind the child’s strengths and choosing strategies that maximizes the potential. The results have been almost instantaneous reflecting on the performance and self-confidence of the child.
As a Specialist teacher she focuses on professional plans and deliver high quality sessions for students to practice and improve skills tapping from over 15 years in the field along with an immense love of education. Having worked with children from different countries studying in various international schools in Singapore, she is familiar with the various aspects of the curriculum.
Veena has worked with children with Dyslexia, ADD, ADHD and mild ASD and have been successful in helping them cope with mainstream curriculum. She is adept at developing effective lesson plans, maintaining positive relationships with parents and instructing students with various levels of learning challenges.
Working with children has spread to other interests like Story telling at the NLB and leading predominantly student-based tours at the Asian Civilization Museum. Apart from English, being fluent in French and other Indian languages like Tamil, Hindi, Kannada helps her to connect better with the children wherever there is a need.
Travelling, reading and photography takes up her free time and practicing taichi regularly keeps her mind and body in good shape.
