Synopsis:

Language difficulties manifest when children’s language development is deficient (Bishop, 2006).

Children diagnosed with dyslexia may also possess language difficulties. Children with language difficulties face many challenges in sustaining language learning although they possess normal intelligence. When compounded by difficulties in phonological and phonemic awareness, reading, spelling, and composition writing can be an arduous task. At times, despite effective classroom instructions on grammar, vocabulary, and syntax, these children often struggle with receptive and expressive language skills which can be seen in their poor ability to use words correctly in their speech and written work.

Dyslexia and language weakness, when combined, can impede learning and the educational development such that these children perform unsatisfactorily in school and underachieve in their academic pursuits. Appropriate guidance and support are necessary to ensure these students improve in their language acquisition which will then help them comprehend other subjects taught in school.

Join our upcoming RETA session to gain insights from real case studies and discussions on supporting these students.
