Synopsis:
Math All Around Us! Supporting Every Learner, Including Dyscalculia Strategies
Mathematics is a core subject across all academic systems worldwide. From the early years, children are introduced to its basic concepts and operations, with complexity increasing over time.
Young students of mathematics may struggle to understand its language, numerical values, and sequencing. Some may also experience challenges such as dyscalculia, which can impact their ability to develop number sense and mathematical reasoning.
In this workshop, we set out strategies that will deepen students’ understanding of how and why mathematical concepts work. The session will also explore practical, evidence-based approaches to support children with dyscalculia, and how both parents and educators can apply these strategies effectively to help children who struggle. This approach deepens comprehension, builds confidence, and connects mathematical thinking to everyday life.
What you will learn from this session:
- Identify early indicators of mathematical difficulties, including challenges in number sense, sequencing, working memory, and processing speed, with a focus on recognising signs of dyscalculia
- Apply practical, step-by-step strategies to break down mathematical concepts into manageable parts, making learning more accessible for children who struggle
- Develop and reinforce mathematical language and vocabulary, with meaningful connections to real-life contexts to support deeper understanding
- Use concrete, visual, and multisensory teaching approaches, including manipulatives and everyday materials, to strengthen conceptual learning
- Implement effective support strategies for children with dyscalculia, tailored for use by both parents at home and educators in the classroom
- Build confidence and reduce math anxiety, creating a positive and supportive learning environment for children with specific learning difficulties (SpLD)
By making math meaningful and connected to everyday experiences, we can foster curiosity, confidence, and a lifelong appreciation for the subject!
