Tricky Learning Profiles: How to Interpret and Manage Them

Not all children presenting with a given specific learning difficulty look the same; we see tremendous variation in individual cognitive/educational profiles. Why is this? Using dyslexia (specific literacy disorder) as an example, this presentation looks at why this is the case.  Are there different subtypes of dyslexia or does a multi-dimensional model better explain the wide individual differences we see?  Drawing on actual case studies, we will explore how having multiple ‘risks’ and co-occurring learning difficulties helps explain both individual variation and the often complex profiles that present in the children we assess and teach. Finally, the case of a child with a complex learning profile will be described in depth – from the perspectives of assessment, interpretation, formulation, intervention and management.
