Synopsis:
Teaching Dyslexics and Struggling Readers to Read
This session will explain why some children who start school learn how to read easily and others fail to attain those skills. It outlines how to distinguish a struggling reader and how to put them on a path to success using a structured literacy program such as DcodeDyslexia.
Presenter:
Mary Moran
Mary Moran is a literacy specialist and educator with more than 40 years’ experience working with children, young people and adults with dyslexia and reading difficulties. Orton-Gillingham-trained in the early 1980s, Mary has dedicated her career to understanding why some learners struggle to read and, crucially, what can be done to help them progress.
Drawing on decades of hands-on teaching experience, Mary developed Dcode Dyslexia, an explicit, systematic and structured literacy programme now used in more than 1,000 schools across Ireland, as well as schools in Wales and internationally. She also developed Ncode, a complementary spelling programme.
A passionate advocate for literacy, Mary speaks about dyslexia, reading difficulties and the wider social and emotional impact of literacy failure. In 2022, she was selected for the Social Entrepreneurs Ireland Impact Programme and was a guest speaker at the inaugural Right to Read Conference in Dublin.
